Launch of the 2018 OECD Economic Survey of Spain

The recovery of the Spanish economy has been more dynamic than most euro area economies, with a robust 3% GDP growth in the past three years. Although it is still extremely high, unemployment has fallen to 14.5% from its peak of 26% in 2013, and in the past year alone 478 000 jobs have been created.

Spanish Congress of Deputies: Session on inclusive growth

Inequality is not a new phenomenon, but what is new are the levels of inequality that have increased rapidly in recent years. This is something that we have been documenting for a long time in the OECD. This work is unknown to a large proportion of the general public, but it is work that we are very proud of because it has helped to push inequality to the forefront of political debate.

    Launch of the Economic Outlook

Today’s Economic Outlook points to a global economy that is losing steam, with the pace of global expansion easing from 3.7% this year to 3.5% in both 2019 and 2020. And one major reason for this is a breakdown in co-operation.

Panel discussion with civil society representatives

The OECD has a long tradition of engaging with civil society. In fact, the OECD Council Resolution on relations with civil society dates from 1962, one year after our establishment. Formally, BIAC and TUAC are our two main entities with which we interact regularly, but we have seen over time a growing engagement of our committees with Civil Society Organisations.

Corruption remains one of the most pressing challenges of our time. It promotes mistrust in governments, public institutions, banks, corporations, politicians, political parties, democracies, you name it. It corrodes our social fabric. To provide a stark example, a 2017 survey, highlights that only 15% of citizens felt the system was working for them, and 69% expressed concerns about ‘corruption’.
