OECD/EU Seminar: Improving tax fairness and tackling tax evasion - a view from the EU Council Presidency and the OECD

I am delighted to have this opportunity to discuss a topic that goes to the heart of the OECD’s mission, and to the heart of our collaboration with the Slovak Republic: improving tax fairness and tackling tax evasion. This year, both the OECD and the Slovak EU Council Presidency have made an important contribution to making international taxation fair and effective.

High-quality education is the single greatest tool for empowering people and improving their opportunities and outcomes. That is why I am pleased to launch the latest results of the OECD’s flagship Programme of International Student Assessment (PISA). This triennial international survey tests the skills and knowledge of 15‑year-old students, providing the global benchmark for the quality, equity and efficiency of school systems.

Second High-Level Meeting of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Co-operation - closing remarks

While the SDG Summit was the “what” conference, the last two days have been the “how” conference. By 2030, we need to end extreme poverty. We need to have made a dent on all poverty. And we should be well on the way to eradicating it altogether.

Second High-Level Meeting of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Co-operation - opening remarks

The urgency of sustainable development is evident in all countries. Shifts in wealth, power and growth challenge traditional development models. At the same time, we see new players, new ideas and new sources of finance. Developing countries are increasingly using taxes and remittances to finance their own development. In Africa alone in absolute numbers, tax revenues dwarf official development assistance by more than ten times.

Remarks at Adoption Ceremony of the BEPS Treaty

I am truly impressed by the large number of countries (99) that have joined this initiative and who are around the table today. More than half are not OECD or G20 members: 55% of this Ad Hoc Group. This in itself is a success, particularly in the context of the new Inclusive Framework on Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) launched a few months ago, and which already includes 87 countries and jurisdictions.
