    Celebrating Japan’s 50th Anniversary - Press conference of OECD Secretary-General, in Tokyo

    Firstly, and most importantly, this year marks Japan’s golden jubilee: 50 years as a member of the OECD. Japan was our first Asia-Pacific member country, and has paved the way to strengthen the OECD’s ties within the region. This year, for the second time, Japan is chairing our Ministerial Council Meeting – the most important annual decision-making event of the Organization, said Angel Gurría.

    The region has been one of the most dynamic and fastest-growing areas in the world. GDP is projected to grow by 5.4% per year on average during 2014-18, and significant gains have been made in terms of poverty eradication and human development.     Corruption undermines trust in policy, it erodes the quality of public administration, and it distorts incentives, taking its toll on investment and growth. Corruption also locks in privilege and inequality, and it can be a factor of oppression. In short, we must stop it, said OECD Secretary-General.
