In today’s world of persistent low growth, high unemployment, rising inequality, and eroding trust, this meeting serves as an opportunity to explore how competition policy can enhance productivity, promote job creation and stimulate much-needed inclusive growth.

This is a vast topic – as can be seen from the diversity of issues to be covered in the Ministerial labs later this morning – so I’d like to focus on two key areas: the role of regulation; and the imperative to shape a new vision for the public service.

Governments have agreed to work together to hold the increase in global average temperature to below 2°C above pre-industrial levels. Yet, the world is currently on course for a global mean surface temperature increase of around 3-5°C by the end of the century.
