Green Growth Indicators in Kazakhstan

 Kazakhstan_River

A better understanding of drivers, related trade-offs and synergies is necessary to gauge the results of green growth policies. In its effort to promote green growth and facilitate exchange of experience on monitoring green growth, the OECD developed a green growth measurement framework with a set of indicators for policy-makers and the public at large.

Statistical systems have seen significant improvements over the past decade in the Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA) region. These include, for example:

  • a widening coverage of data collection,
  • adoption of international standards, and
  • development of new statistical products.

The practical application of this OECD set of Green Growth Indicators is now being extended to Kazakhstan under the Country Programme Agreement between Kazakhstan and the OECD.

A workshop on Green Growth Measurement was held in Astana, Kazakhstan on 23-24 June 2016. The main objectives of the workshop were to:

  • discuss work by the Committee on Statistics on developing green growth indicators, using the OECD measurement framework,
  • discuss the definition and relevance of green growth indicators for Kazakhstan, and
  • discuss the possibility of developing a report on green growth indicators in Kazakhstan to integrate them in the government agenda.
