Experts’ Meeting on Institutions and Regulatory Governance of Digital Platforms

Tuesday, 5 April 2022

Governments have to ensure that the digital transformation works in favour of citizens and consumers. This is especially pertinent in the calls to rethink existing governance and regulatory approaches to online platforms, which have become part of our everyday lives .

An OECD experts’ meeting on the institutions and regulatory governance of online platforms was held on 5 April 2022. This meeting aimed to support governments and regulators in addressing the risks that platforms present for our economies, societies and democracy, while enabling potential benefits such as enhanced consumer choice and subjective well-being . To that end, the meeting fomented policy dialogue and exchange on institutional and regulatory approaches to online platforms to date and helped identify lessons from past approaches to regulation (e.g. economic regulation, international regulatory co-operation) to inspire solutions for the future.. The meeting also built on recent work by the OECD such as the OECD Recommendation on Agile Regulatory Governance to Harness Innovation.

The meeting gathered participants from several OECD policy communities, such as the Regulatory Policy Committee, Public Governance Committee, the Network of Economic Regulators, the Competition Committee, the Committee on Digital Economy Policy and other relevant working groups. Invitees also included key experts from academia, think-tanks and international organisations.
