Environment in emerging and transition economies

2nd Expert Workshop on Environmental Sustainability

Versión en Español

On 4 July 2023, the OECD Latin America and the Caribbean Regional Programme (LACRP) organised the virtual 2nd Expert Workshop on Environmental Sustainability, under the theme “Climate change indicators for evidence-based policy making in LAC” (with simultaneous Spanish-English interpretation).

LAC countries are not a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, however overall emissions in the region are increasing. Moreover, LAC countries are facing high exposure and vulnerability to climate risks, while threats to human health and biodiversity from land use change and air pollution are increasing.

The OECD has long-standing experience in environmental data and indicators, their use in policy development and assessments and the formulation of related information systems in countries. OECD Environment at a Glance - OECD Indicators provides an in-depth analysis on indicators from the OECD Core Set of Environmental Indicators – a tool to evaluate environmental performance and to track the course towards sustainable development in OECD countries. The OECD has now updated these indicators and applied them to the LAC region, to provide effective and harmonised indicators in LAC to assess both growth prospects and environmental performance and to support more effective policymaking.

This Expert Workshop was an opportunity to:

  • learn more about the Environment at a Glance in Latin America and the Caribbean and its key findings in relation to climate change, biodiversity and use of environmental policy instruments;
  • discuss on climate-related hazards in the region and how best to support evidence-based policy choices to address them; and
  • exchange views and experiences on climate information and data gaps and needs and provide input on a possible way forward for addressing them.
