Following the end of the civil war in 1992, El Salvador has undergone substantial economic, political, and social change. Young people aged 15-29, accounting for 28.58% of the total population in 2014, play a significant role in the development process of a country that is characterized by one of the highest crime rates in the world.

Despite the institutional and normative progresses made, insecurity, violence and gangs have become important social problems in El Salvador. Young people are at the centre of these phenomena, both as victims and perpetrators. This has led to the development of a series of programmes, projects and activities targeting youth. However, these interventions have limited scope and coverage. In addition, there is a lack of coordination among government entities hampering the development of comprehensive interventions that include several important areas for the development and well-being of youth, such as health, education, work, living conditions, etc.

In this context, a comprehensive and integrated approach is required to formulate effective youth-oriented policies and programmes that go beyond the issue of violence and insecurity. Learn more
