Agro-food economy holds key to a brighter future for young people in developing countries, says new OECD Development study

Today's world youth population -aged 10 to 24- is 1.8 billion people strong and represents the largest cohort ever transitioning to adulthood. Eighty-eight per cent of them live in developing countries. With the right policies in place, they can be influential actors of economic and social progress. Conversely, failing to improve their prospects, in particular for the most disadvantaged, could make the global youth bulge a brake for economic and social development. Read more

Youth photo contest "Take a shot at your future": Results are out!

‌Over the course of the competition, more 130 entries from 47 countries were received. After an exciting round of public voting on social media, 2 final winners were selected. They were invited to the Youth Inclusion project's final conference and the Global Development Forum on 4-5 April 2018. They were also invited to act as our social media correspondents and facilitate a dialogue on the issues that matter to youth around the world. Read more

In Senegal, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) or agricultural production and processing structures are mainly located in the suburbs of the capital. They have few technical and financial means to develop and market their products. Moreover, their products lack of visibility and presence in the local market, in shops and supermarkets.

OECD Development Matters: What youth need: A greater focus on job quality

‌For young people, successful entry into the world of work – that is, successful transition from education to employment – means more than simply finding a job. Successful transition occurs only when young people find decent work. What is actually meant by this has been the subject of much debate for a number of years; but its essence is encapsulated in the ILO’s notion of freely chosen and productive employment.

Togo: Launch of the Youth Well-being Policy Review of Togo, 14 March 2018, Lomé

‌The OECD Development Centre, together with the Ministry of Grassroots Development, Crafts, Youth, and Youth Employment (MDBAJEJ) and the Delegation of the European Union to Togo organised an event in Lomé on 14 March 2018 to present the key findings and recommendations of the Youth Well-being Policy Review of Togo and to develop a roadmap identifying the key actions needed to implement the recommendations of the study. Read more

Cambodia, Presentation of the OECD report Youth Well-being Policy Review of Cambodia, 1 February 2018, Phnom Penh

‌The OECD Development Centre presented the Youth Well-being Policy Review of Cambodia in a high-level event in Phnom Penh on 1 February, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport of Cambodia (MoEYS) and the Delegation of the European Union to Cambodia. The study uses a multidimensional approach to look at various dimensions of well-being affecting young people and gives recommendations for the formulation of public policies in favour of youth and for government action. Violence holds El Salvador’s economic and social development potential hostage. Violence and inequalities often reinforce each other in Latin America: countries with higher levels of inequality tend to have higher rates of intentional homicides. El Salvador, however, stands out. Its homicide rate is disproportionately high compared to its level of inequality.

To make Viet Nam's economic boom more inclusive, invest more in the disadvantaged and rural youth, says new report

Economic and political reforms (Doi Moi), initiated in the mid-1980s, have transformed Viet Nam into one of the world's fastest-growing economies. However, growth has produced fewer benefits for the poorest. The country also has yet to improve the well-being of a sizeable share of youth, especially those disadvantaged and in rural areas, according to the OECD Development Centre's Youth Well-being Policy Review in Viet Nam. Cambodia: National training on Monitoring and Evaluation, 3-5 October 2017, Phnom Penh 

As part of the capacity building component of the project, the OECD Development Centre in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) and the MDF-Asia Training and Consultancy organised a training workshop on Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) of policies and programmes for youth. The workshop was held in Phnom Penh, 3-5 October 2017 gathering 25 participants from capital and local governments. Read more

A National Youth Strategy would help Peru reap its demographic dividend, says new OECD Development Centre study 

With 26.9% of its population aged between 15 and 29, Peru has a demographic dividend to reap that can further boost its development. It is expected to last until the year 2038, after which the share of the dependent population will be larger than the working-age population. Adopting a National Youth Strategy would be a step forward to ensuring the well-being and active role of Peruvian youth in the economy and society, argues a new OECD Development Centre study titled Youth Well-being Policy Review of Peru. OECD Development Matters: Youth Employment and Inclusive Growth: Part of the same coin in Cambodia

Some countries in the South Asia and Pacific region are experiencing a rapid increase in the number of working-age people. This will create some opportunities as it will contribute to reducing the dependency ratio and increasing the possibilities for social cohesion policies. But if these people fail to find decent jobs, then per capita income may slow down.
