The workshop on OECD Best Practices in Assessing the Environmental and Economic Sustainability of Bio-based Products was held in Montreal, Canada on July 23-24, 2009 where the following topics have been discussed:

Existing sector, national, or international approaches for assessment of sustainability of bio-based products, such as bio-based chemicals, bio-based plastics, enzymes, bio-based materials, and biofuels;

Common and divergent approaches in existing assessment methods;

Consideration of what might constitute a comprehensive sustainability assessment;
-
Barriers to the application of current assessment methods; and
-
The key elements of potential best practices in the assessment of the environmental and economic sustainability of bio-based products, as well as how these might be further developed within the OECD.
