The Creativity in Education Summit is a gathering of educators, policy makers, researchers, and industry leaders from around the world. Organised jointly by the OECD Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI) and the Global Institute of Creative Thinking (GIoCT), the summit is dedicated to exploring the latest trends, approaches, and promising practices in creative and critical thinking in schools.

Since its inception in 2019, the Creativity in Education Summit has been a platform for stimulating discussions, and learning about innovative ideas and actions aimed at transforming education for the 21st century. The summit brings together a diverse range of stakeholders who share a common goal of promoting creativity in and for education.

The 2023 Creativity in Education Summit will be the stage for the launch of the OECD’s Professional Learning framework for fostering and assessing creativity and critical thinking, an initiative that seeks to enhance the teaching of creative and critical thinking skills in schools internationally. The professional learning framework arises from the OECD’s “Fostering and Assessing Creativity and Critical Thinking” project.

What is the importance of creative and critical thinking, notably in light of the quick deployment of AI in our societies? What are the policy challenges of embedding an approach based on knowledge and skills in the day to day practice of teachers and students? How does Portugal support schools and universities to foster student creative and critical thinking? Portugal’s Minister of Education will open the event and draw attention to what is at stake.

Andreas Schleicher will share examples and data on how education systems in OECD countries are embedding creative and critical thinking in teaching and learning and what more could be done.

What are the opportunities and risks of generative AI in education? How do these relate to creativity? What are the equity and ethical considerations around the use of generative AI and how do these play out globally? What role should regulation play? What role should experimentation play? Join us to hear a variety of speakers provide short reflections on what generative AI means for creativity in education

In this session, the OECD will present the fostering and assessing creativity and critical thinking project, which works across primary, secondary and higher education, and introduce two outcomes: the OECD professional learning framework for creativity and critical thinking in education and the CERI app on creativity and critical thinking (www.oecdcericct.com).

The Global Institute of Creative Thinking will launch and demo the new platform for case study sharing across the globe, as well as announce the "GIoCT Creativity in Education Award 2024" (theme: creative thinking in education for climate action)

This will be followed by a sharing session on creative thinking projects from around the world. Each panellist will have 10 minutes to discuss the project content, its impact and other relevant learnings that may be useful moving forward. This will set up the morning break out session which will be after the coffee break.

The session will draw on recent examples of lesson plans released by the OECD showing possible ways to integrate creativity and critical thinking into climate education. Other examples will be presented too and the session will discuss what is involved.
