Media Advisory - OECD Environmental Performance Review of the Slovak Republic 2024

05/04/2024 -

OECD Environmental Performance Review of the Slovak Republic 2024
Launch at 10:00 CET on Thursday 18 April in Bratislava

The Slovak Republic has reduced domestic material consumption, emissions of greenhouse gases and major air pollutants over the past decade. However, the country is not on a net-zero pathway. Air pollution remains high and much municipal waste ends up in landfills. The Slovak Republic also faces the challenge of expanding wastewater treatment coverage in the many small municipalities. Despite an extensive protected area network, most habitats and species are in and unfavourable state.

The OECD will present its third Environmental Performance Review of the Slovak Republic on Thursday 18 April 2024, providing an in-depth examination of the country’s progress towards its goals on biodiversity, climate neutrality and sustainable development. The Review also looks at the Slovak Republic’s use of economic instruments and EU funds to boost green investment and its efforts to reform the protected area system and align agriculture and forestry with biodiversity objectives.

OECD Deputy Secretary-General Fabrizia Lapecorella will present the Review’s findings and recommendations and take questions at a launch event alongside Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Environment of the Slovak Republic Tomáš Taraba starting at 10:00 at the Ministry of the Environment Foyer on Námestie Ľ. Štúra 1 in Bratislava. Ambassador František Ružicka, Permanent Representative of the Slovak Republic to the OECD will provide closing remarks.

The presentation will be followed by a press conference starting 11:05 CET.
