STAN STructural ANalysis Database

Short address for this page: oe.cd/stan

Direct link to STAN data

The STAN database is a comprehensive tool for analysing industrial performance at a relatively detailed level of activity across countries. It includes annual measures of output, value added and its components, labour input, investment and capital stock, from 1970 onwards, which allow users to construct a wide range of indicators and to focus on areas such as productivity growth, competitiveness and general structural change.

STAN uses a standard industry list compatible with those presented in related OECD databases which enables to make international comparisons and provides sufficient detail to highlight sectors according to their R&D intensity or digital intensity.

STAN is primarily based on member countries' annual national accounts by activity tables and any missing detail is estimated using other sources of data, such as national business surveys/censuses, which are maintained by OECD, Eurostat or compiled directly from national sources. Many of the data points in STAN are estimated and flagged to the attention of users ; they do not represent official member country submissions.

  • NEW: STAN indicators

STAN Indicators are derived from the OECD's STructural ANalysis (STAN) database. They are compiled to respond to the needs of analysts and researchers interested in measuring economic performance and structural changes. Additionally, they complement the OECD's Trade in Value (TiVA) indicators and Going Digital Indicators.

STAN Indicators relate to:

    → the structure of production and of employment;
    → labour productivity and labour costs;
    → investment;
    → capital stock.

STAN indicators are presented for all OECD countries, however they are not provided for country groups because of differences in economic activities and time coverage across countries. In STAN Indicators, the time-period and economic activities are the same as that published in the underlying STAN database for Structural Analysis.

  • SNA08, ISIC REV.4 version of STAN, 2015 reference year

This version of the STAN incorporates the latest benchmark revisions of 2008 System of National Accounts (SNA08) statistics that many countries (notably in Europe) carried out. As a consequence, volume measures are presented using 2015 as the reference year (previously, 2010). This also reflects the changes in OECD's National Accounts database that took place in December 2019. This version of STAN also provides more variables compared to older versions, such as investment and capital stock in ICT equipment, sotware and databases. It also includes further industry breakdowns, in particular ICT manufacturing and services activites are shown separately, and introduces industry groupings based on "digital intensity" to add to those focusing on R&D intensity and ICT. Country data are added to the OECD's online dissemination service OECD.Stat as they become available (see STAN coverage). Users can access the series either using the default query tools or via bulk downloads. The STAN list of economic activities covers all ISIC Rev. 4 activities in National Accounts statistics (SNA08) submitted to OECD and Eurostat (maximum A*64), some additional 2- and 3- digit ISIC Rev. 4 details, as well as specific aggregates for better linking with vintage SNA (ISIC Rev. 3) time series.

  • SNA08, ISIC REV.4 version of STAN, 2010 reference year (last update: August 2018)

SNA08 ISIC Rev. 4 tables are available for all OECD countries with series up to 2016-17 (see coverage). The data can be accessed via OECD.stat either using the default query tools or via bulk downloads (ready-made Excel or zipped files). STAN industry list covers all ISIC Rev.

Most OECD countries started publishing National Accounts according to SNA08 recommendations in 2014. For an overview of the main changes from SNA93 to SNA08, see: http://www.oecd.org/std/na/sna-2008-main-changes.htm

  • SNA93, ISIC Rev. 4 version of STAN (last update: November 2012)

SNA93 ISIC Rev. 4 tables are available for 15 OECD countries, with data up to 2011 for most countries (see coverage). The data can be accessed via OECD's online dissemination service OECD.stat either using the default query tools or via bulk downloads (ready-made Excel or text files). STAN industry list covers all ISIC Rev. 4 activities in National Accounts statistics (SNA93) submitted to OECD and Eurostat (maximum A*64), some additional 2- and 3- digit ISIC Rev. 4 details, as well as specific aggregates for better linking with vintage SNA (ISIC Rev. 3) time series.

  • SNA93, ISIC Rev. 3 version of STAN (last update: May 2011)

This version of STAN, maintained between 2000 and 2011, is based on SNA93 National Accounts statistics and the International Standard Industrial Classification of all economic activities, Rev. 3 (ISIC Rev. 3), and covers all activities including services. Tables are provided for 32 OECD countries,  with data up to 2009 for most countries (see coverage). The data can be accessed via OECD's data dissemination service OECD.stat either using the default query tools or via bulk downloads.

Related ISIC Rev. 3 versions of Analytical Business Expenditure on R&D ANBERD and Bilateral Trade Database by Industry and End-use category BTDIxE are also available via the OECD.STAT tool.

Earlier versions of STAN were based on ISIC Rev. 2 and covered the manufacturing sector only.
