India hosts successful second 2023 Asia Initiative training workshop

26/09/2023 - From 20 to 22 September 2023, India hosted the three-day workshop "Strategies for effective tax co-operation: the foreseeable relevance in exchange of information" in Nagpur. The event, the second in-person training session of the Asia Initiative in 2023, was attended by 35 tax officials from Armenia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, The Maldives and Thailand. It was co-organised by the Department of Revenue of the Ministry of Finance of India, the National Academy of Direct Taxes in Nagpur and the Secretariat of the Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes (Global Forum).

The workshop aimed to equip Asia Initiative member countries with a thorough understanding of international standards and guidelines for drafting requests for information foreseeably relevant for tax purposes.

Through a series of practical examples and various case studies, participants sharpened their knowledge on the nuances and complexities of the standard of foreseeable relevance. The exercise leaves them skilled to assess whether a requested information meets this standard in the context of a tax investigations.

It was launched in November 2021 to develop a regional dynamic for improved collaboration and as a platform to co-ordinate a capacity-building programme on tax transparency among partners. The Asia Initiative is currently co-chaired by India and Indonesia and counts 17 members which endorsed the objectives set out in the Bali Declaration, a call to enhance tax co-operation to sustain domestic resource mobilisation.
