The OECD Principles of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) ensure the generation of high quality and reliable test data related to the safety of industrial chemical substances and preparations. The principles have been created in the context of harmonising testing procedures for the Mutual Acceptance of Data (MAD).

As the demand for safer chemicals grows, the field of alternatives assessment is becoming increasingly important in guiding the transition towards safer, less toxic alternatives. A major limitation that can hinder efforts is the lack of consistent criteria for defining “safer" alternatives. This guidance outlines key considerations for the identification and selection of safer alternatives.

Risks to human health and the environment posed by chemicals is determined by the chemical-specific hazard properties and the extent of exposure to chemicals. Read more on the OECD work in developing and harmonising methods for assessing the exposure of chemicals to humans and the environment.

Most OECD countries and many non-members have a system of regulatory oversight for products of modern biotechnology (genetically-engineered /transgenic organisms) which are intended for release to the environment. The OECD biosafety work programme aims to consider all types of organisms (plants, trees, animals, micro-organisms) and to promote international harmonisation.

Per- and poly-fluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) are substances that have many manufacturing and industrial applications because they impart useful properties (fire resistance and oil, stain, grease and water repellency). Some of the properties are associated with environmental and human health concerns. To support a global transition towards safer alternatives, this Portal facilitates the exchange of information.

German database Information system für gefährliche Stoffe IGS is now linked to eChemPortal. The IGS provides public access to a variety of information on chemical and microbiological substances mostly in German. The focus is on regulatory information reflecting German and European, as well as Swiss, US and selected other legislation and assessments. Beside this, information on substance data and emergency procedures is available.

This toolbox is a compilation of resources relevant to chemical substitution and alternatives assessments. Alternative assessments are processes for identifying, comparing and selecting safer alternatives to replace hazardous chemicals with the objective of promoting sustainable production and consumption.

The aquatic life benchmarks (for freshwater species) are based on toxicity values reviewed by EPA and used in the Agency's most recent risk assessments developed as part of the decision-making process for pesticide registration. Each Aquatic Life Benchmark is based on the most sensitive, scientifically acceptable toxicity endpoint available for a given taxon of all scientifically acceptable toxicity data available to EPA.

Structure-Activity Relationship (SAR) is an approach designed to find relationships between chemical structure (or structural-related properties) and biological activity (or target property) of studied compounds. As such it is the concept of linking chemical structure to a chemical property (e.g., water solubility) or biological activity including toxicity (e.g., fish acute mortality). Qualitative SARs and quantitative SARs,
