Regional Policies

In the European Union, over the last decade the legislation concerning pesticides was substantially revised in Europe. The revision resulted in new harmonised legislation for all 28 EU Member States concerning placing of pesticides on the market, provisions on the sustainable use of pesticides, machinery and the collection of pesticide use statistics.

The Regulation 1107/2009/EC concerning the placing of plant protection products on the market provides the provisions for the registrations including the zonal evaluation of plant protection products in Europe. As regards to IPM, the regulation states that the proper use of plant protection products shall comply with the general principles of IPM as stated in the Directive 2009/128/EC.

The Directive 2009/128/EC establishing a framework for Community action to achieve the sustainable use of pesticides has the overall objective is to establish “… a framework to achieve a sustainable use of pesticides by reducing the risks and impacts of pesticide use on human health and the environment and promoting the use of Integrated Pest Management and of alternative approaches or techniques such as non-chemical alternatives to pesticides”. In particular Article 14 and Annex III of this Directive deal with IPM.
