International organisations have initiated approaches to foster IPM implementation which are part of international legally or not legally binding documents or instruments.

FAO

The International Code of Conduct on the Distribution and Use of Pesticides was one of the first voluntary Codes of Conduct in support of increased food security, while at the same time protecting human health and the environment. It was first adopted in 1985 and established voluntary standards of conduct for all public and private entities engaged in, or associated with, the distribution and use of pesticides, and since its adoption has served as the globally accepted standard for pesticide management. The Code, in conjunction with its supplementary technical guidelines, has been instrumental in assisting countries to put in place or strengthen pesticide management systems and further successful Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programmes are being implemented in developing countries.

FAO promotes IPM as the preferred approach to crop protection and regards it as a pillar of both sustainable intensification of crop production and pesticide risk reduction.  As such, IPM is being mainstreamed in FAO activities involving crop production and protection.
