Global Forum Secretariat assists Niger in the implementation of the standard on transparency and exchange of information on request

13/03/2023 – As part of its induction programme for Niger, the Global Forum Secretariat (Global Forum) launched a series of technical-assistance activities on the implementation of the standard on transparency and exchange of information on request (EOIR), in Niamey, from 7 to 10 March 2023.

A national awareness-building seminar was held with the various stakeholders involved in the transparency and exchange of information framework in Niger. This included representatives from the One-Stop Shop for business creation, the Bar Association, the Chambers of Notaries, the Chartered Accountants Association, the Association of Tax Advisors, the Financial Intelligence Unit, the Central Bank and the tax administration. Participants discussed the importance of international co-operation in the fight against tax evasion, the international tax transparency standards and their implementation and benefits for domestic resource mobilisation.

The mission also discussed Niger’s maturity level on the implementation of the EOIR standard, with the objective of testing the country’s current EOIR framework to detect potential areas for improvements and, if appropriate, to inform an action plan with improvement measures to be discussed with the government. The action plan would be implemented with the support of the Global Forum.

Authorities, including the Minister of Finance and the Director General of Taxes, reiterated their commitment to the work of the Global Forum and to the implementation of the tax transparency standards, with a focus on the preparation of Niger’s first peer review, scheduled to start in 2024, and the establishment of EOIR as part of their domestic resource mobilisation strategy.
