European Commission, László Andor, Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion

 

 

László Andor (born 3 June, 1966, in Zalaegerszeg, HUNGARY) a Hungarian economist, holder of a Ph.D in economics, associate professor, editor of the journal “Eszmélet”. Since 10 February, 2010 he has been Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion.


Academic career

  • Following his studies in the United States (George Washington University, Washington, D.C) he earned an M.A. in Development Economics at the University of Manchester, UK in 1993 as a British Council Fellow.
  • Earned his M.A in economics from the University of Economic Sciences (today’s Corvinus University of Budapest) in 1989.
  • Graduated from Zrínyi Miklós Gimnázium (secondary grammar school) in Zalaegerszeg in 1984.

Professional career

  • From 10 February 2010 onwards, Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and

  • Associate professor at the Economics Department at the Corvinus University of Budapest (currently on unpaid leave) and at the King Sigismund College (currently on unpaid leave).
  • Participated in a number of international research projects like the European Union supported project for European Economic Policy Co-operation (EPOC 2002-2005), or the UK co-funded project on economic policy and combating poverty (2001-2002).
  • Since 1993 - editor of the journal “Eszmélet”, a quarterly journal for social critique and culture.
  • Since 1999 - secretary and member of the board of trustees for the Kaldor Price.
  • 2005-2010 - member of the board of directors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in London, where he represents Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Croatia.
  • 2008-9 vice-chair of Audit Committee
  • 2007-8 chair of Financial and Operations Policies Committee
  • 2006-7 chair of Budget and Administrative Affairs Committee
  • 2004-2005 - member of the editorial board of the journal “Egyenlít?” (a monthly magazine on sociological and cultural subjects).

  • 2004-2005 – research for the European Trade Union Institute (The Labour Market and the Introduction of the Euro in Central Europe)
  • 2004 – member of the organization team of the Progressive Governance Conference in Budapest
  • 2003-2005 – advisor in the Prime Minister’s Office.
  • 2002-2005 – senior researcher at the Institute for Political Sciences.
  • 1999-2001 – advisor for the World Bank on SAPRI (Structural Adjustment Participatory Review Initiative)
  • 1998-1999 – expert of the Budgetary and Finance Committee of the Hungarian National Assembly
  • Since 1998 – member of the board of trustees at the Foundation of European Studies (Europe 2002).
  • 1998 – supervising the Hungarian edition of the Third Way by Anthony Giddens
  • 1997-1998 – visiting professor at Rutgers University (USA), where he focuses on the relations between the European Communities and Hungary as well as on the transition
    period in Hungary and Central-Eastern Europe.
  • 1996-1999 – member of the board of directors of the youth committee of the Hungarian Economics Association.
  • 1993-1997 – head of the College for Advanced Studies in Social Theory at the Budapest University of Economic Sciences and Public Administration.
  • 1989-1991 – research fellow at the Economic and Social Research Institute of Trade Unions (ESRITU).


Political affiliations

  • Member of the board of the Economic Section of the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP). Cochairman of the Economic Section since 2005 and editor of its economic journal “Álláspontok” (Standpoints).
  • Member of the board of József Attila Foundation, a social-democratic think tank (2002-2007).
  • As a delegate of MSZP he was a member of the Budapest Municipality’s Committee for European Integration and Foreign Affairs between 2002 and 2005.


Personal life

Mr Andor lives with his family, Erika Varsányi and their two children (2001, 2004)
