Sustainable urban development

Housing has an impact on the environment through the use of land, materials, energy, and the transportation patterns it shapes.

Environmental policies must balance development and environmental quality by incorporating the cost of environmental impacts into housing prices – but this can reduce housing affordability.

The OECD works with governments to create sustainable housing solutions which take into account a range of aspects relevant to well-being, including housing affordability, environmental and economic impacts
