Compendium of Enterprise Statistics in Armenia 2018

Over 2017-2019, the OECD worked closely with the Statistical Committee of the Republic of Armenia (Armstat) to improve its capacity to collect, analyse, disseminate and harmonise official business statistics.

As part of the work, the OECD assisted Armstat in the implementation of a methodology to harmonise the development and collection of entrepreneurship indicators in line with the OECD-Eurostat Entrepreneurship Indicators Programme and, in particular, the Eurostat-OECD Manual on Business Demography Statistics.

In co-operation with Armstat, the OECD produced a Compendium of Enterprise Statistics in Armenia 2018, presenting comprehensive and detailed information about the role played by the SME sector in Armenia’s economy. The Compendium features structural business statistics (number of SMEs, employment, turnover, exports, average monthly wages, value added and productivity) and business demography statistics (enterprise births, deaths, share of young enterprises), providing an international comparative perspective with SME performance in OECD and EU member countries.

Key facts included in the Compendium show that in 2017:

  • SMEs comprised more than 99% of all enterprises
  • SMEs generated 66% of the total business employment
  • The share of SMEs in the total business turnover stood at 62%
  • SMEs generated 60% of value added

As a result of this work, Armstat has also produced an annual SME statistical bulletin presenting key figures and trends on Armenia’s SME sector.

This report has been developed in the framework of the EU4Business Initiative. The Initiative covers EU support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the region of the Eastern Partnership which brings together the EU, its member states and six partner countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.
