OECD Southeast Asia Regional Forum 2017

The 2017 OECD Southeast Asia Regional Forum was held on 24 August 2017 in Bangkok, Thailand. Bringing together policy makers from Southeast Asia and OECD countries, international and regional organisations, and business‌ representatives, it served as a platform to discuss the opportunities and policy challenges of digital transformation in Southeast Asia.

The ongoing digital transformation of economies and societies in Southeast Asia holds much promise to spur innovation, spread knowledge, generate efficiencies and improve services, thereby boosting living standards, and fostering integration into the world economy. However, the increasing digitalisation of economies and societies also raises important policy questions. Governments must forge coherent and comprehensive policy approaches that enable their economies to make the most of an increasingly digital-driven global economy while also addressing possible adverse effects. By capitalising on mega trends, Southeast Asia can further harness the benefits of digital transformation investment. The OECD, through the OECD Southeast Asia Regional Programme (SEARP), is supporting Southeast Asian countries’ policy reform priorities as well as regional integration efforts.

The discussions included sessions on the lessons that can be learned from experiences in other regions, policy options for achieving sustainable digital transformation in Southeast Asian economies and linking the workforce to quality jobs in a digital era.

Press release: To seize the opportunities of digitalisation, Southeast Asia needs to close the gap between Technology 4.0 and Policy 1.0
