South East Europe Competitiveness Outlook 2021

The third edition of Competitiveness in South East Europe: A Policy Outlook comprehensively assesses policy reforms in the WB6 economies across 16 policy dimensions crucial to their competitiveness. It leverages a highly participatory assessment process, which brought together the views of OECD experts, WB6 policy makers and local non-governmental stakeholders to create a balanced and realistic depiction of their performance.

20 years of the OECD South East Europe Programme

The OECD has been working with South East Europe (SEE) since 2000 to ensure peace, stability and prosperity in a region weakened by conflict, but endowed with rich resources and dynamism. Governments, business leaders and civil society have worked together under the leadership of the OECD to meet economic challenges, including weathering the global economic and financial crisis and preparing for European Union accession. The OECD has supported the region to design and implement reforms to foster private sector development and competitiveness, attract more and better investment and raise living standards.

Global South East Europe: Unleashing the Transformation Potential for Growth in the Western Balkans

The Western Balkans are looking for ways to boost competitiveness and strengthen linkages with global value chains. This OECD report tracks the changes in the region’s export structures and identifies high-potential products and sectors to help the transition to higher value-added outputs. It gives targeted recommendations on how to narrow the economic gap between the region and its European peers and create new, higher quality jobs for its citizens.

SME Policy Index: Western Balkans and Turkey 2019

Robust SME sectors are critical to the prosperity of the six Western Balkan economies and Turkey, accounting for over 70% of those employed in the business sector and generating 65% of value added in these seven economies. Yet their potential remains untapped, as SMEs across the region grapple with numerous challenges that hamper their growth and productivity. The SME Policy Index reviews the implementation of the ten principles of the Small Business Act for Europe (SBA) in the seven EU pre-accession economies and provides recommendations for unleashing their potential.
