OECD-CVM Centre 2021 Annual Meeting

 9 December 2021

Investing in the financial literacy skills of young people and MSMEs in LAC: Comparative evidence from the region, policy solutions and their relevance in the COVID-19 crisis

Co-hosted by the OECD and the Securities and Exchange Commission of Brazil (CVM), the event was opened by Marcelo Barbosa, Chair,  CVM, and Flore-Anne Messy, Deputy Director (a.i.), Directorate for Financial and Enterprise Affairs, OECD.

The discussion focused on two groups that have been heavily affected by the COVID-19 crisis and that are key to the resilience of LAC economies:

  • Young people: the webinar discussed what we know about their financial literacy thanks to the PISA Financial Literacy Assessment, how they have been affected by the COVID-19 crisis, and how financial education in school can provide them with the financial literacy skills they need to thrive in life.

  • MSMEs: the webinar presented the most recent evidence collected in LAC on MSMEs’ financial and digital competences to understand how they are navigating the COVID-19 storm; and how MSMEs in LAC compare with those from other countries that participated in the G20 Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion report “Navigating the storm: MSMEs’ financial and digital competencies in COVID-19 times”.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Annamaria Lusardi, University Professor of Economics and Accountancy at the George Washington University School of Business; and founder and academic director of GWSB’s Global Financial Literacy Excellence Center.

The event was attended by high-level participants from Latin America and the Caribbean and from around the world including officials and experts from the OECD International Network on Financial Education (INFE), ministries of finance and education, central banks, regulatory and supervisory authorities, governmental officials, as well as international organisations, the academic community, the private sector and NGOs.

The 5th Meeting of the OECD/INFE LAC Regional Network, open to member public authorities from the region, will take place on 10 December. The Network will discuss ongoing and future data collection on financial literacy of adults and MSMEs in LAC, as well as the OECD/CVM Centre project on financial literacy and inclusion of Indigenous people in LAC.
