International Organisations’s Practices for Effective International Rulemaking
The Compendium of International Organisation’s Practices: Working Towards More Effective International Instruments brings together the experiences of some 50 IOs with different mandates, memberships and institutional frameworks. Users can navigate the Compendium to better understand the varied landscape, key principles and practices of international rulemaking.
The ultimate objective of the IO Compendium is to draw lessons from these experiences to improve international rulemaking - which is meant to benefit all - in 5 key areas:
1. Variety of international instruments - Untangling the web of worldwide rules.
2. Implementation - Putting the rules into practice.
3. Evaluation - Making sure rules get results.
4. Stakeholder engagement - Reaching out to others to make better rules.
5. Co-operation between IOs - Working together.
The Compendium provides illustrative examples of IO practices in each of these areas. It is designed to serve not only national and international policy practitioners, but also civil society actors, academic experts, private actors, and citizens who seek to understand, benefit from and perhaps even contribute to the international rulemaking process.
