    Strategic Evaluation of the European Union's Cooperation with Lesotho 2008-2013

    The evaluation concluded that the European Union’s engagement with Lesotho was appropriate to the geopolitical, post apartheid, context of the mid 1990s when relations between Lesotho and South Africa were difficult: the EU followed Lesotho’s ‘isolationist’ stand and adopted a purely country-based development cooperation approach. More recently, the changed context provides a unique opportunity to set a new direction for EU engagement.

    Evaluation of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD)

    This evaluation of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) corporate programme performance from 2012-2015 builds on previous assessments, including the Mid-Term Evaluation and the Triennial Review. The evaluation looks at ensuring accountability and learning from DFID political governance portfolio interventions. The study seeks to learn lessons to support future WFD programming and political governance programming by DFID.

    Mid-Term Evaluation of DFID’s Health Research Programme Consortia

    Overall, the Research Programme Consortia are an excellent funding modality for integrated and programmatic research – particularly the length and relative flexibility of funding. The evaluation finds that the consortium structure and programme is highly effective. This is now a mature and internationally respected funding modality for development research.

    DFID’s Trade Development Work in Southern Africa

    The Independent Commission for Aid Impact (ICAI) undertook a review of DFID’s trade development work in Southern Africa during the first half of 2013. We reviewed two programmes: the £100 million TradeMark Southern Africa (TMSA) and the £9 million regional component of the Mozambique Regional Gateway Programme. Our fieldwork raised a number of serious concerns about TMSA’s ability to achieve impact.
