Webinar: Impacts of COVID-19: How STI systems responded to the crisis

The OECD Science, Technology and Innovation Outlook 2021 provides new insights into the critical role that research and innovation systems have played in responding to the COVID-19 crisis, from improving our understanding of the disease to the rapid development of vaccines. Drawing on new data across a range of science and innovation policy areas, the report also sheds light on the challenges that innovation systems face amid the current economic crises, and what governments can do to improve their resilience and preparedness for future crises.

On January 12, OECD iLibrary, the OECD Directorate for Science, Technology and Innovation, and ACRL/Choice hosted a presentation of the key findings from the new STI Outlook, followed by a conversation with OECD's Andy Wyckoff and RAND Corporation Senior Policy Researcher Marjory Blumenthal about the implications for research and innovation in the US.

Speakers

	Andrew Wyckoff Director of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) OECD Andrew Wyckoff is the Director of the OECD’s Directorate for Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) where he oversees the OECD’s work on innovation, business dynamics, science and technology, information and communication technology policy. His experience prior to the OECD includes: program manager of the Information, Telecommunications and Commerce program of the US Congressional Office of Technology Assessment (OTA); economist at the US National Science Foundation (NSF); and programmer at The Brookings Institution. He has served as an expert on various advisory groups and panels, including the Global Board of Trustees of Digital Future Society (DFS), the Lancet/FT Governing Health Futures 2030 Commission, the International Advisory Board of the Research Council of Norway, and Head of OECD’s Delegation at the G20 and G7 meetings on ICT and Digital Economy. Mr. Wyckoff holds a BA in Economics from the University of Vermont and a Master of Public Policy from Harvard University.
	Marjory Blumenthal Senior Policy Researcher RAND Corporation Marjory Blumenthal joined the RAND Corporation as director of the experimental Science, Technology, and Policy program in spring 2016. She has addressed topics like automated vehicles, smart cities, measuring the impact of research, innovation in China, and trends/applications of emerging technologies. Her previous roles include: founding executive director of the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board (CSTB) at the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine; leadership position at Georgetown University developing academic strategy, promoting innovation in teaching/learning, and fostering research; and executive director of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology within the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Marjory has written numerous books and serves on a variety of boards/advisory bodies. She did her undergraduate work at Brown University and her graduate work at Harvard University.
