The Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes (Global Forum) delivered a three-day seminar on “Exchange of Information as a Tool to Combat Offshore Tax Evasion” in Abuja, Nigeria on 23 – 25 October 2019. The seminar was co-organised with the West African Tax Administration Forum (WATAF) as the Global Forum and WATAF are working together to build West African tax administrations’ capacities in exchange of information in order to increase tax transparency and fight tax evasion.
This seminar focused on the connection between the domestic tax investigation, the information gathering framework and the international infrastructure for exchange of information (EOI). 40 participants representing 7 west African countries (Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Togo) attended the seminar. Participants from Nigeria represented both the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the Federated States Revenue Boards.
Opening the seminar, Mr. Tunde Fowler the Executive Chairman of the Nigeria FIRS said that "the seminar will improve the knowledge of participants on EOI and enhance the implementation of EOI standards by countries which are at an advanced stage." He invited west African countries that have not started the EOI implementation to take step to do so.
