Anne de Lattre

‌Anne de Lattre, Founder and for many years Director of the “Club du Sahel”, left us during the heart of the summer. Her death provoked a wave of emotions within a large community of friends. To each she leaves a special heritage. To all and to West Africa, she leaves the Club – this particular space for dialogue and co-operation. Anne initiated the creation of the “Club du Sahel” in 1976 because she was convinced that the international community could not hold an indifferent gaze to the terrible dramas and droughts of 1973-74.  At the dawn of globalisation, very little attention was paid to this region. It was necessary to create a sustainable coalition to come to its aid.

From Praia to N’Djaména; Nouakchott, Banjul, Dakar, Bamako, Ouagadougou, Niamey and Bissau; not forgetting Cotonou, Abidjan, Accra, Lomé; to Paris, Bern, Washington, New York, Ottawa, The Hague, Brussels, Rome, Vienna, Bonn and Berlin...everyone who had the privilege to encounter this eminent lady remembers her with great respect and admiration. Such was the extent of her influence that her African friends fondly called her “la mère du Sahel”.

Mr. François-Xavier de Donnea, President of the Club, and the personnel of the Secretariat, present their most sincere condolences to her family and countless friends.
