The OECD 2014 High-Level Policy Forum on Migration
Under the theme Mobilizing Migrants’ Skills for Economic Success, the meeting has offered Ministers and other high-level representatives an opportunity to share views and experiences on key current and emerging policy challenges for migration management and migrants’ economic and social integration as well as on how best to build public confidence on migration issues.
This High-Level Policy Forum on Migration was particularly timely. In many countries, migration policies are at a crossroad as they have to face emerging skill needs and the effects of population ageing, while maintaining the integrity of the migration system and improving the labour market outcomes of immigrants and their children through a better selection, development and use of their skills.
The Forum consisted of four sessions focusing on i) reconciling short-term and long-term objectives in migration policies, ii) building public confidence on migration issues, iii) engaging with employers and unions, and iv) fostering the role of migration and migrants in skills strategies.
The High-Level Policy Forum was chaired by Mr Chris Alexander, Canadian Minister of Citizenship and Immigration. Ms. Andrea Nahles, German Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, was Vice-Chair.
