For too many young people, the school-to-work transition period is characterised by unemployment, informal work, temporary contracts or unpaid internships with few advancement opportunities. The COVID-19 pandemic, like the 2008 crisis, has made it even harder for young people to find an initial job or becoming victim to "last-in, first-out" practices. This can have scarring effects on youth, impacting their career prospects and earnings over the longer term.
While governments at all levels are taking actions to smooth these transitions, particularly in light of COVID-19, it is at the local level where implementation is best understood, innovative new approaches can be tested before being scaled up and new challenges can be first identified. This webinar, organised in partnership between the OECD’s Local Development Forum and the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SALAR), aims to connect local practitioners and policymakers to share learnings and best practices in improving school-to-work transitions for all youth.
