Behavioural Insights Conference, Cape Town, South Africa


The Western Cape Government (WCG) and OECD hosted 250 behavioural practitioners and policy makers from 21 countries who represented national and sub-national governments, regulators, NGOs, academia, private sector and multi-national bodies. The conference focused on the themes of fostering global partnerships, with a focus on sub-national governments and emerging economies, and developing the capacity to use BI to tackle complex problems. It also tested the BASIC toolkit for the first time with the community of behavioural practitioners and policymakers new to the field, where it was then revised and consulted on with the wider behavioural community, then released in 2019.

Behavioural Insights In Public Policy, OECD, Paris, France


The OECD hosted more than 150 behavioural practitioners and policy makers to discuss thematic applications of BI, and what the field needs to continue developing. On 11 May, the OECD partners with the European Nudge Network (TEN) and colleagues in the Directorate for Financial and Enterprise Affairs, Environment Directorate and Science, Technology and Innovation Directorate to address the next frontiers for behavioural insights with regards to sustainable behaviour, protecting consumers, making markets work and enhancing organisational behaviour. On 12 May, participants explored the topic of how behavioural science can be used in major policy agendas for good and how behavioural practitioners can ensure that the science is applied responsibly.

Behavioural Insights and New Approaches to Policy Design


As part of the OECD initiative on “New Approaches to Economic Challenges” (NAEC) and work of the OECD Public Governance Directorate, more than 150 central and local government officials, regulators, staff of international organisations and academics met in Paris to discuss the challenges and opportunities of applying behavioural insights to policy making. Participants looked at behavioural approaches in the context of public sector innovation and policy delivery tools and brainstormed on the key ingredients for the use of behavioural approaches across governments and regulatory agencies. This follows the OECD publication “Regulatory Policy and Behavioural Economics” (2014) that maps the application of behavioural science in policy design and regulatory delivery.
