The OECD Development Centre lauched the Youth Well-being Policy Review of Peru study

 

 

‌The report was presented by Mr. Federico Bonaglia, Deputy Director of the OECD Development Center, in a high level event organised on Thursday 3rd August, in Lima. The activity was attended by Mr. Fernando Cáceres, Vice Minister of Education; Mr. Carlos Tengan, National Secretary for Youth and Mr. Steefan Pauwels, Head of the Cooperation Section of the European Union Delegation to Peru.

“Since the beginning of the 21st century, Peru has experienced considerable socioeconomic progress. But young Peruvians are not fully reaping the benefits of this performance. 38.5% of young Peruvians still experience deprivation in different dimensions of well-being, such as employment, education, health, civic participation and social inclusion, simultaneously”, said Federico Bonaglia, Deputy Director of the OECD Development Centre while launching the report in Lima. “An effective Youth Strategy would help enhance young Peruvian’s contribution to the country’s development”, he added.

The Youth Well-being Policy Review of Peru study is part of the OECD Development Centre’s Youth Inclusion Project, co-financed by the European Union. It assesses the situation of social inclusion and well-being of youth Peruvians using a multidimensional approach and gives recommendations for the formulation of public policies in favour of youth and for government action.

Two panel discussions were held during the high level event on the topics of youth civic participation and education. These panels were composed of government representatives, representatives of international organizations, researchers and youth organisations. All participants welcomed the findings of the study and discussed the implications for youth policies in Peru. The Vice-Minister of Education expressed confidence that the findings and recommendations of the report will serve to improve ongoing programmes in the education field. Furthermore, the National Secretary for Youth indicated that this report will be the starting point for the future work of the government on youth issues, and that it will help to raise awareness and advocate for action on issues relating to youth within and outside the government. The National Secretariat for Youth (SENAJU) will finalise, with support of the OECD Development Centre, the National Youth Action Plan within the next months.

The study will be disseminated nationwide and among officials and representatives of civil society.
