| The political economy of fiscal posibilism in Latin America |
|
Fiscal policy is crucial for Latin America’s development in terms of economic growth, social cohesion, and democratic consolidation. Many governments in the region, moreover, have taken great strides to establish solid fiscal regimes – but much remains to be done. These were among the main conclusions of the OECD Development Centre experts meeting held last 24 and 25 April in Paris, gathering academics and seasoned policy makers.

Will tougher economic times make it more difficult to undertake fiscal reforms postponed during recent boom years? The meeting, organised with the support of FIIAPP, discussed ongoing analysis for the next Latin American Economic Outlook, including the link between fiscal policy and development, the quality of public spending, the structure of Latin American tax systems, and issues related to the informal sector, among others. More, next October, when LEO 2009 will be presented at San Salvador, during the XVIII Ibero-American Summit.

LEO at the World Economic Forum on Latin America
Joined by leading economists Ricardo Haussmann and Moisés Naim, the director of the OECD Development Javier Santiso presented LEO 2008 at the World Economic Forum on Latin America, in Cancún (15-16 April).

During the interesting roundtable discussion, Hausmann, Naim and Santiso agreed on the need to boost the efficiency and quality of public expenditure in the region, while making it fairer and more progressive. The OECD Development Centre also participated in roundtables covering topics such as competitiveness in Latin America and the rise of China as a major exporter of capital in the region.
