Background

An OECD team led by Mr Sergio Arzeni, Director of the OECD Centre for Entrepreneurship, SMEs and Local Development visited Sydney on 5-6 December 2011 to launch two OECD reports:

Enabling local green growth: addressing climate change effects on employmentand local development

Climate Change, Employment and Local Development in Sydney

The OECD produced these reports as part of a worldwide study on the impacts of climate change on employment and local development, and the creation of sustainability-focused jobs. The global report draws on innovative learning models around the world including case studies of green clusters, restructuring traditional industries, local government leadership and local innovation.

Metropolitan Sydney was one of the localities studied in detail, along with London (UK), Extremadura (Spain) and Podlaskie and Pomorskie (Poland). The OECD sent a team of experts to Sydney in 2010 to research and meet with state and local government, education and industry experts, and to survey local companies. The Sydney partners have been working together to strengthen their partnership with each other, and are looking at ways of broadening the partnership with others across Sydney.

The workshop on 5 December outlined the key findings and recommendations of the two reports, and looked at how Sydney can develop stronger partnerships across Sydney to reduce carbon emissions and increase economic and employment opportunities. A critical dimension of the project is how industry, education and training agencies, state agencies and councils can work at local level to implement initiatives to support the transition to a low carbon economy.

The official launch of the report took place on Tuesday 6 December at the Customs House in Sydney, in the presence of Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP and Pam Christie, Relieving Director-General, NSW Department of Education and Communities.  The videos and presentations of the official launch are available in the City of Sydney's website.
