Développement économique et création locale d’emplois (LEED)

12th Festival of Economics (Trento, Italy) - 2017

Health inequality

Trento, Italy, 1-4 June 2017

"When discussing social mobility, a subject we have dealt with in previous editions of the festival, attention is mainly paid to people’s place on the income scale, and it is often forgotten that the most important dimension of equal opportunities is linked to the possibility of conducting a healthy life and being able to enjoy active ageing. This is an area where public intervention is particularly appropriate, given that there are important external benefits in creating more favourable environmental conditions for a healthy life. However, these externalities are not always pursued by public operators, who tend to concentrate on the effects rather than the causes of many widespread diseases. Often too little attention is paid to the results that can be obtained by basic research in the bio-medical field in terms of improving quality of life for millions of people.".

Tito Boeri | Scientific Director of the Festival of Economics

Rationale

Several analysis have highlighted the positive relationships between health, psycho-physical well-being and cultural practice. Time spent in contact with art and beauty, or music and theatre, contributes to raising the quality of life, improving the diseases management, and the same therapeutic process can be enriched with new creative and narrative approaches.
