The project “Support for Convergence with EU Water Quality Standards in Moldova” (2006-2007) aimed to assist the Government of Moldova in revising its system of surface water quality standards in light of international best practices and domestic capabilities. This reform would make SWQSs environmentally and economically feasible and respond to Moldova’s commitment to converge with the EU environmental legislation, including the Water Framework Directive.

The project report builds on the detailed technical justification of the proposed new SWQS system and analyses the policy aspects of its implementation, elaborates recommendations for legal and institutional changes to introduce this reform, and outlines the key aspects of the implementation process.
