Environment in emerging and transition economies

Shared environmental information system and green growth - Regional workshop for the countries of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia

This workshop showcased how synergies among the fields of environment, green growth/economy and sustainable development could be exploited in the view of developing effective national approaches towards measuring green growth in the EECCA region. Governments willing to pursue policies designed to promote green growth need indicators that can raise awareness, measure progress and identify potential opportunities and risks.A shared environmental information system (SEIS) is currently being developed at the pan-European level to support a regular environmental assessment processes. The OECD supports EECCA countries in developing a green growth measurement framework. It invited experts from ministries of economy, environment and national statistical offices to explore how the SEIS data flows could be used in applying green growth indicators in the region.

The objectives of the meeting were to:

  • Enhance the understanding of green growth or green economy concepts and related measurement frameworks in EECCA;
  • Bring together the national SEIS and green growth/economy networks;
  • Explore how the SEIS data flows (those underpinning the UNECE environmental indicators) can be used in applying green growth indicators in the region;
  • Identify how components of green growth measurement that are not covered through UNECE environmental indicators could be addressed in the future under EaP GREEN and ENPI-SEIS projects; and
  • Advise if SEIS should include additional components of green growth measurement.
