Speakers at the Policy Forum on the Future of Work

 

Philippe Aghion 

‌Philippe Aghion is a Professor of Economics at Harvard University, and a fellow of the Econometric Society and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on the economics of growth. With Peter Howitt, he pioneered the so-called Schumpeterian Growth paradigm which was subsequently used to analyze the design of growth policies and the role of the state in the growth process. Much of this work is summarized in their joint book Endogenous Growth Theory (MIT Press, 1998) and The Economics of Growth (MIT Press, 2009), in his book with Rachel Griffith on Competition and Growth (MIT Press, 2006), and in his survey “What Do We Learn from Schumpeterian Growth Theory” (joint with U. Akcigit and P. Howitt. In 2001, Philippe Aghion received the Yrjo Jahnsson Award of the best European economist under age 45, and in 2009 he received the John Von Neumann Award.

A 25 years old Italian Internet entrepreneur. He is the founder of Oilproject, a MOOC (Massive online open courses) and the largest online free school in Italy, with more than 2 million students every year and 5500+ high quality lessons. Everybody can study for free on videos, texts and exercises spacing from chemistry to literature, from history to maths. Everybody can submit lessons and share his knowledge. Its tagline is “Be Free To Learn!”. In the past he has been a digital communications consultant, a Web Php developer and a freelance journalist.

 

John EvansJohn Evans

John Evans is General Secretary of the Trade Union Advisory Committee - TUAC (www.tuac.org ) to the OECD since 1985 and Chief Economist of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) since 2012. Since its creation, he has been heading the Labour20 (L20) as part of the G20 process jointly with the ITUC (www.labour20.org ). He worked as an economist in the Economic Department at the Trade Union Congress in London, with the International Federation of Commercial, Clerical and Technical Employees (now UNI Global Union) and the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) with a specific focus on Labour Markets and the Impact of Technological Change. He is currently a member of the Comité Médicis at the Amundi Group, the Conseil d'Orientation, IDDRI (the French Institute for Research on Sustainable Development) and the Council of Ruskin College, Oxford, as well as of several World Economic Forum Global Agenda Councils on Employment.  

 

Angel GurríaAngel Gurría

 Angel Gurría is the Secretary-General of the OECD since June 2006. As OECD Secretary-General, he has reinforced the OECD's role as a ‘hub” for global dialogue and debate on economic policy issues while pursuing internal modernisation and reform. Mr. Gurría is a Mexican national and came to the OECD following a distinguished career in public service in his country, including positions as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Finance and Public Credit in the 1990s. Mr. Gurría holds a B.A. degree in Economics from UNAM (Mexico) and a M.A. degree in Economics from Leeds University (United Kingdom). He is married and has three childrenAngel 

 

Philip Jennings‌Philip Jennings

Philip Jennings is General Secretary of UNI Global Union - the global trade union for the service sectors - which represents 20 million workers worldwide. Jennings is a leading commentator on the future world of work and was invited to join Adriana Huffington, Eric Schmidt and others in addressing the 2015 Future of Work conference in London. He firmly believes that it is time for big business to work towards creating a more responsible world and has taken his message to the G20, IMF, World Bank, OECD and World Economic Forum – tireless in his pursuit of a “seat at the table” for working people. In 2011, Philip accepted the nomination of United Nations General Secretary Ban Ki-moon to serve on the board of the U.N. Global Compact.

 

Janina Kugel

‌Janina Kugel is Chief Human Resources Officer and Member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG. She is globally responsible for the areas of Human Resources, Diversity, EHS (Environmental Health and Safety) and Corporate Social Responsibility. Before she served as the Chief Human Resources Officer for Osram and held various leadership positions in Siemens in the areas of Human Resources, Corporate Executive Development, Strategy and Innovation Management in Germany, Italy and China. Prior to joining Siemens, Janina worked several years in Management Consulting at Accenture. During this period she worked for major companies throughout Europe and the United States of America, mainly focusing on process re-engineering, restructuring and organizational design. Having worked and lived throughout the globe, she became an active member and supporter of Diversity and LGBTI initiatives in Germany as well as on an international basis.  She is also member of the Practice Advisory Council of Hertie School of Governance, Member of the University Council, University of Applied Sciences Ingolstadt and Member of the Board of Siemens Foundation (Siemens Stiftung).Janina earned a Master of Economics from the University of Mainz, Germany, and the Università degli Studi di Verona, Italy. 

  

Bernd Liepert Bernd Liepert

Dr. Bernd Liepert is the Chief Innovation Officer of KUKA AG, a world leading manufacturer of industrial robots. Dr. Liepert earned his diploma in mathematics in 1990 from the University of Augsburg and his honorary doctor degree from University of Magdeburg in 2011. Since 1990 Dr. Liepert has worked for KUKA. As Chief Innovation Officer of KUKA AG, Dr. Liepert is now responsible for expanding innovations at KUKA where he can apply his vast robotics experience at the interface between technology and the market. He is President of euRobotics AISBL – the European Robotics Association. euRobotics was founded in September 2012 and has become the private side of SPARC, the European Public-Private Partnership in Robotics in 2013. As president of these associations Dr. Liepert has been leading the European robotics community and representing it at high political levels.

  

Lisa Lynch

Lisa Lynch is Interim President of Brandeis University and the Maurice B. Hexter Professor of Social and Economic Policy.  Her research examines the impact of technological change and organizational innovation on productivity and wages. Lynch was chief economist at the U.S. Department of Labor (1995-1997); director and chair of the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston (2004-2009); and president of the Labor and Employment Relations Association (2013-2014).  A former faculty member at Tufts University, MIT, OSU, and Bristol University, she earned her BA at Wellesley College, and MS and PhD at the London School of Economics.

 

Andrea Nahles

Andrea Nahles, Member of the German Bundestag, is Minister of Labour and Social Affairs. The literary scholar attracted nationwide attention for the first time when she was elected Federal Chair of the Young Socialists in 1995. In 1998, she joined the German Bundestag. From 2009 to 2013, she was leading the SPD as Secretary General. She was born in Mendig in 1970 and lives with her husband and her little daughter in her home country, the Eifel region. 

 

 

Michael Nelson

Dr. Michael R. Nelson works on Internet-related global public policy issues for CloudFlare, a startup that has improved the performance and security of more than 4 million Web sites worldwide.  Prior to joining CloudFlare early this year, he was a Principal Technology Policy Strategist in Microsoft’s Technology Policy Group and before that was a Senior Technology and Telecommunications Analyst at Bloomberg Government.  In addition, since January, 2009, Dr. Nelson has been teaching courses and doing research on the future of the Internet and cyber-policy at Georgetown University. Prior to joining the Georgetown faculty, Nelson worked for almost ten years at IBM.  He started his career in Washington, DC, working for Senator Gore, then chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Science, Technology, and Space. After five years on Capitol Hill, he moved to the White House and worked with Vice President Gore and President Clinton's science adviser on issues relating to telecommunications policy, cybersecurity, encryption, electronic commerce, and information policy.  Dr. Nelson has a B.S. from Caltech and a Ph.D. from MIT.

 

Eli Noam

Eli Noam has been Professor of Economics and Finance at Columbia Business School since 1976. In 1990, after having served for three years as Commissioner with the New York State Public Service Commission, he returned to Columbia. He is the Director of the Columbia Institute for Tele-Information, an independent university-based research centre focusing on strategy, management, and policy issues in telecommunications, computing, and electronic mass media. He has also taught at Columbia Law School and Princeton University's Economics Department and Woodrow Wilson School. Noam has published over 19 books and 400 articles in economic journals, law reviews, and interdisciplinary journals.

‌Thomas E. Perez

Thomas E. Perez is the 26th United States’ secretary of labor. He has committed to making good on the promise of opportunity for all, giving every working family a chance to get ahead, and putting a middle-class life within reach of everyone willing to work for it. Most recently, Perez was assistant attorney general for civil rights at the U.S. Department of Justice, where he also worked as a career federal employee beginning in the late 1980s. He has also been a member of the Montgomery County Council and secretary of Maryland's Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. He has held teaching positions at the University of Maryland School of Law and the George Washington School of Public Health. He holds a master's of public policy and a law degree from Harvard University.

Giuseppe Recchi

Giuseppe Recchi is the executive chairman of Telecom Italia and Fondazione Telecome Italia. He is member of the executive committees of Cofindustria, the Italian Corporate Governance Committee, the Italian Institute of Technology and a member of Assonime’s Board. He co-chairs the B20’s task force on Improving Transparency and Anti-Corruption and is the World Economic Forum’s Partnering against Corruption Initiaves’s director. His career began as an entrepreneur at Recchi SpA in 1989, a general contractor in the construction of high-tech public infrastructure. In 1999 he joined General Electric, serving managerial positions in the Europe and the USA. He holds an engineering degree from the Polytechnic University of Turin. 

 

 

Guy Ryder

‌Guy Ryder was elected as ILO Director-General in 2012. In pursuit of his pledge to position the Organization as a determined actor translating principle into action and capable of making a major difference to the working lives of people on all continents, he has launched a major reform process geared to assuring the ILO’s authority on world of work issues. Ryder joined the ILO in 1998 as Director of the Bureau for Workers’ Activities. From 1999 to 2002 he was Director of the Office of the Director-General. During this time the ILO’s Decent Work Agenda was launched and won support from the international community. He returned to the ILO in 2010 as Executive Director, International Labour Standards and Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work. Ryder has held posts at the International Department of the Trade Union Congress in London and in the international trade union movement. In 2002, he was appointed General Secretary of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU), leading the process of unifying the democratic international trade union movement. He was elected first General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) in 2006.

  

Stefano ScarpettaStefano Scarpetta

Stefano Scarpetta has been the Director of ELS since 2013. He provides the leadership in the design, management and coordination of the activities of ELS and contributes to the implementation of the Secretary-General’s strategic orientations in a broad range of policy areas, notably Employment, Labour, Migration, Health, Skills, Gender and Tackling Inequalities.
Mr. Scarpetta joined the OECD in 1991. He led several large-scale projects, including: “Implementing the OECD Jobs Strategy”; the “Sources of Economic Growth”; and contributed to others including “The Policy Challenges of Population Ageing". From 2002 to 2006 he was at the World Bank as the labour market advisor and lead economist in charge of the Bank-wide programme of Employment and Development. He returned to the OECD in 2006 as the Head of Division in charge of Japan, Korea, Mexico, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, China and India. In 2008 he moved back to ELS as the Head of the Employment Analysis and Policy Division and the editor of the Employment Outlook. In 2010, he became the Deputy Director of ELS.
He holds a PhD in Economics from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris) and an M.Sc. in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

 

 

William SpriggsWilliam Spriggs

William Spriggs is Chief Economist to the AFL-CIO, and a professor in, and former Chair of, the Department of Economics at Howard University.  From 2009 to 2012 he was Assistant Secretary for the Office of Policy at the U.S. Department of Labor.
Bill has held leading economic policy and research positions in government and with NGOs, including: chairman for the Healthcare Trust for UAW Retirees of the Ford Motor Company and The UAW Retirees of the Dana Corporation Health and Welfare Trust; staff director for the federal National Commission for Employment Policy; and, Executive Director of the National Urban League’s Center for Opportunity and Equality. His PhD is in Economics from the University of Wisconsin, where he began his labor career as co-president of the American Federation of Teachers, Local 3220.

 

 Jacques van den BroekJacques van den Broek

 Jacques van den Broek has been appointed CEO and chairman of the Executive Board of Randstad Holding nv in March 2014. He is responsible for operations in Germany, Australia, New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia, as well as for Business Concept Development, Global Client Solutions, HR, Marketing & Communications and Public Affairs. Jacques graduated in law at Tilburg University and briefly held a management position at Vendex International before joining Randstad as a branch manager in 1988. Over the years he has held various management positions at Randstad, including Regional Director in the Netherlands and Marketing Director Europe. In 2001 he became CEO of newmonday.com and in 2002 he was appointed Managing Director of Capac Inhouse Services (now called Randstad Inhouse Services). At the time he was also responsible for Randstad Denmark and Switzerland. Jacques van den Broek joined the Executive Board in January 2004. Since then Jacques has been responsible for the significant boost of our global accounts which yield approximately 25% of Group revenue. He led the integration of major operations after the Vedior merger, including the one in France.

Brent Wilton

Prior to joining Coca-Cola as director of Global Workplace Rights in April of 2015, for the last 15 years, Brent has with the International Organization of Employers (IOE) representing the interests of business in 150 countries on global labour and social policy matters across the wider multilateral system. As a result, Brent has directly engaged with Global Union Federations, NGOs, Governments, other stakeholders and opinion makers in the negotiation and resolution of issues. Brent was engaged from the outset in the stakeholder discussions that led to the creation and implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
