Over the last few years, Viet Nam has significantly improved its overall logistics performance, ranking 39 out of 160 countries in the 2018 World Bank Logistics Performance Index. In 2019, Vietnam’s freight and logistics market was estimated at USD 61.83 billion, with the transportation and storage sector accounting for 2.7% of its total GDP and 3.5% of the employed population.

Similar to other ASEAN Member States and although it has managed to maintain a positive GDP growth, Viet Nam is suffering from the socio-economic impact of the COVID-19 outbreak. Pro-competitive laws and regulations can help Viet Nam continue its progress in logistics and help the country quickly recover from the pandemic. 

Fostering competition in ASEAN was a project that reviewed regulatory constraints on competition in the logistics sector in all ten ASEAN member countries to identify regulations that hinder the efficient functioning of markets and create an unlevel playing field for business. 

It comprised two parallel components: competition assessment reviews of specific logistics sub-sectors and competitive neutrality reviews of small-package delivery services. The project was undertaken in partnership with ASEAN and funded by the UK Prosperity Fund (UK Government).
