Water for sustainable growth and the SDGs - thicker font

Water management is not merely an environmental issue. It is a development issue. The OECD-GWP Global Dialogue on Water Security for Sustainable Growth recently established how water security contributes to sustainable growth. This connection is highlighted by the role of water in the Sustainable Development Goals, with a stand-alone water goal and several references to water in other goals.

The Task Force on Water Security and Sustainable Growth demonstrated in their Securing Water, Sustaining Growth report that water resources can play a defining role in economic development. Water-related risks act as a drag on global economic growth, and the scale of the challenge that can be monetised is estimated to be in the order of US$500 billion annually (excluding environmental risks).
