Directorate for Science, Technology and Innovation

Key STI statistics, databases and publications

This page provides access to the main statistical publications and databases of the
OECD Directorate for Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI). DSTI manages these databases to produce internationally comparable statistics and indicators which underpin policy-related analytical work on industry and innovation, particularly with respect to the links between technology, competitiveness and globalisation. DSTI also plays a leading role in the development of international statistical standards in the STI area.

Databases

Main Science and Technology Indicators (MSTI) Database

Contains key indicators on expenditure on research and experimental development (R&D) as well as on R&D personnel and researchers, patents and international trade in R&D-intensive industries.

Countries: All OECD member countries, three zones (EU28, EU15 and total OECD) and the following non-member economies: Argentina, China, Romania, the Russian Federation, Singapore, South Africa and Chinese Taipei.

Research and development (R&D) Database

Contains comprehensive results of the OECD/Eurostat data collection on R&D expenditure and personnel from 1981 onwards. It also serves as input material for the MSTI and ANBERD Databases.

Countries: All OECD member countries, plus non-member economies: Argentina, China, Romania, Russian Federation, Singapore, South Africa and Chinese Taipei.

Research and Development Statistics (Analytical Business Enterprise Research and Development – ANBERD)

R&D expenditure data by industry for 100 manufacturing and services sectors based on the ISIC Revision 4 classification.

Countries: Currently 34 OECD countries and 4-5 non-member economies. ANBERD is updated on a rolling basis.

Industrial data (Structural Analysis Database – STAN)

Industry employment, production, investment, trade data for 57 manufacturing and services sectors based on the ISIC Rev. 3 classification for different time periods depending on countries and variables with the earliest available for 1970.

Countries: 32 OECD member countries including Mexico.

STAN Input-Output (I-O)
Database

Matrices of inter-industrial flows of transactions of goods and services (domestically produced and imported) in current prices across 48 sectors.

Countries: all OECD countries (except Iceland) and 11 non-member economies: Argentina, Brazil, India, Indonesia, China, Romania, Russian Federation, South Africa, Chinese Taipei, Thailand and Vietnam.

STAN Bilateral Trade by Industry and End-use (BTDIxE)

ISIC3 version

ISIC4 version

Estimates of current price imports and exports of goods by industrial activity (based on ISIC Rev.3 and ISIC Rev.4) and end-use category (i.e. household and capital consumption, intermediates inputs into production, and a few mixed end-uses, such as passenger vehicles and personal computers). Data are presented in the form of time-series, for a wide list of reporters and more than 150 partners (including the World).

Countries:  All OECD countries, 120 non-member economies including the BRIICS, major African, Asian, European, Latin American and Caribbean economies.

Patent Statistics Databases

The OECD patent database covers data on patent applications to the European Patent Office (EPO), the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), patent applications filed under the Patent Co-operation Treaty (PCT) that designate the EPO, as well as Triadic Patent families.

Data mainly derives from the latest version of EPO’s Worldwide Patent Statistical Database (PATSTAT).

Pre-defined sets of indicators include patent counts by county and technology fields, indicators of international co-operation in patents (co-inventions, cross-border ownership of patents).

Countries: Coverage on applicants and inventors for all countries.

Broadband Portal

The OECD broadband portal provides access to a range of broadband-related statistics gathered by the OECD. Policy makers must examine a range of indicators which reflect the status of individual broadband markets in the OECD. The OECD has indentified five main categories which are important for assessing broadband markets.

Statistics on:

  • the communication infrastructure and subscribers to mobile, Internet, broad-band, cable TV, household and business access and use of ICTs
  • telecommunication and mobile telecommunication services revenue, telecommunication infrastructure investment, ICT value added in business sector value added, R&D expenditure in selected ICT industries, ICT employment in business sector employment
  • ICT-related patents as a percentage of national total (PCT filings), share of countries in ICT-related patents filed under the PCT, trade in ICT goods, top 50 telecommunication and IT firms.

Broadband statistics covering prices and speeds (e.g. average advertised download speeds) as well as additional penetration statistics and coverage statistics.

Countries (for most indicators): 33/34 OECD countries, plus the Russian Federation.

Activity of Multinational Enterprises (AMNE) Database

Inward and outward activities of foreign multinationals in manufacturing and services at mainly 2-digit ISIC Rev. 3 level including:

  • number of establishments
  • number of employees
  • production/turnover/value-added
  • compensation of employees
  • R&D expenditures
  • number of researchers
  • gross fixed capital formation
  • intra-firm exports and exports
  • infra-firm imports and imports
  • gross operating surplus
  • technological payments
  • technological receipts

The most recent data (from 2008) are also available in ISIC Rev.4.

Countries: 28 OECD countries for manufacturing and 25 OECD countries for services with information on activities of OECD multinationals in emerging and developing countries.

Innovation indicators

The OECD has played a key role in the development of international guidelines for surveys of business innovation (Oslo Manual) and the design of indicators constructed with data from such surveys. In addition to developing methodological guidance, the OECD also carries out analytical studies using innovation-related indicators and microdata.

Nanotechnology indicators

Key indicators relating to nanotechnology.

CDH Indicators

The OECD carried out a collaborative project with the UNESCO Institute for Statistics and Eurostat which aimed at developing internationally comparable indicators on the careers and mobility of doctorate holders.  An expert group with representatives from national statistical bodies was formed to develop the technical components of the project and start compiling data at national level.

TiVA Database

The goods and services we buy are composed of inputs from various countries around the world. However, the flows of goods and services within these global production chains are not always reflected in conventional measures of international trade.
The joint OECD – WTO Trade in Value-Added (TiVA) initiative addresses this issue by considering the value added by each country in the production of goods and services that are consumed worldwide. TiVA indicators are designed to better inform policy makers by providing new insights into the commercial relations between nations.
