Robin Middlehurst, Professor, University of Surrey

Robin Middlehurst is Professor of Higher Education at the University of Surrey and Director of the University’s Centre for Policy and Change in Tertiary Education.  Her main areas of research, teaching and consultancy are concerned with the nature and impact of change in higher education policy and practice with a particular focus on :

·        leadership and leadership development

·        governance and management

·        quality assurance and enhancement at national and international levels

·        ‘borderless higher education’ and international HE strategy

Robin’s research has had both policy and practice-related outcomes.  In the territory of distance learning and quality assurance, a major report for the CVCP (now Universities UK) on “The Business of Borderless Education: UK Perspectives” contributed to the establishment of the Observatory on Borderless Higher Education, a strategic information service set up by Universities UK and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.  The initial report and subsequent research is also contributing to the work of UNESCO’s Global Forum on International Quality Assurance, Accreditation and the Recognition of Qualifications and to OECD/CHERI’s work on cross-border provision and e-learning.

In the field of leadership development, Robin co-directs (with Dr Tom Kennie) the Top Management Programme for Higher Education in the UK (now in its sixth year of successful operation).  She also contributes to leadership development programmes for a range of UK universities.  In 2004 she participated in the strategic leadership seminar sponsored by the European Universities’ Association and the OECD/IMHE programme.  Following its successful launch in March 2004, Robin will be working on secondment (half-time) for the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education in the UK as their Director of Strategy and Research.

Robin has taught at all levels of education from primary to adult and higher education and has also worked in social and youth work.  Before coming to the University of Surrey (in 1998) she was Director of the Quality Enhancement Group of the national Higher Education Quality Council (subsequently QAA) for four years.
