Reviews of Higher Education in Regional and City Development are the OECD’s tool to mobilise HEIs for economic, social and cultural development of cities and regions. In the past five years, OECD has conducted 29 reviews across 19 countries. The reviews involve financial and human resource commitment from the participating cities and regions. WG 2: Building stronger regions through cluster-based development Room 2.8

Internationally many universities and their regional partners are focusing on particular clusters – agglomerations of firms in interrelated industry areas together with supporting institutions and infrastructures – as a way of maximising the impact of their industry engagement and tapping into industry networks. WG 2: Enhancing agri-food industry through innovation Room 2.7

Andalusia’s economy has a long tradition in agriculture and fisheries. The innovation in Andalusia’s primary sector encompasses several RDI fields, such as veterinary sciences, chemistry and genetics. Supportive research development and innovation for the industry is one of the cornerstones in agrifood development in Andalusia, particularly through the Agri-food International Excellence Campus (CeiA3) which brings together the universities of Almería, Cádiz, Córdoba, Jaén and Huelva to enhance the new generation agricultural model and services in the regional economy. Agri-food International Excellence Campus is presented by the University of Cordoba, the project leader, and the University of Huelva.

WG3: Biotech, a key to a healthier and wealthier region Room 2.6

The Regional Government of Andalusia is focusing on new strategic areas for the economic development, particularly in the health and biotechnology field. WG4: Sustainable growth, building the green economy Room 2.5

Andalusia is involved in the development of renewable energy technologies, particularly involving solar energy and wind energy. The regional government’s renewable energy strategies will be presented by the Director of the Andalusian Agency of Energy, while the Regional Ministry of Environment will highlight Andlalusia’s natural resources protection-based approach. The University Pablo de Olavide will present their project on Environment, Biodiversty and Global Change, while the University of Cadiz will present research and transfer in the field of solar energy. A renewable energy company will describe how stakeholders are developing a regional green growth model.
