A universal agenda for a sustainable future

The United Nations General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in September 2015. Its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are an integrated framework based on historical international agreement. Achieving this universal agenda presents not only challenges but also opportunities for all countries, including OECD Members, to work towards a more sustainable future for all generations, present and future.

The OECD's contribution to the SDGs

The OECD has a wide range of existing data, policy tools, and dialogue platforms, which can be put to the benefit of countries, as they develop national strategies for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

As a long-standing partner with the UN, the OECD is supporting its Members and Partners as they work to achieve this ambitious Agenda. It is adapting its expertise by applying a “SDG lens” to its multi-disciplinary and sectoral work, and has adopted a strategic response to the SDGs, in the form of an Action Plan.

2021 Meeting of the OECD Council and Partners on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

1 March 2021

On 1 March 2021, the Secretary-General will chair the annual Meeting of the Members of the OECD Council and Partners on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The meeting, which will take place in virtual format, brings together over 65 governments from the OECD and its partner countries, as well as international organisations, to share national experiences in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The meeting will be opened by H.E. Munir Akram, President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Under the overall theme of “Meeting the Challenge of Financing the SDGs in the COVID-19 Era”, senior officials will lead discussions on the following topics:

  • Looking at the role of tax in delivering the SDGs

  • Leveraging private investment to foster progress towards the SDGs

  • Making strategic use of the budget process and public procurement to accelerate progress on the SDGs

This meeting complements and contributes to key United Nations processes on the SDGs, including preparations for the High-Level Political Forum to be held under the auspices of the ECOSOC in July 2021. To learn more about OECD-UN relations, read here.
