Ministerial Meeting 2017: Building inclusive globalisation
ITEM 6: BUILDING INCLUSIVE GLOBALISATION BY IMPLEMENTING BETTER POLICIES FOR IMPROVED CompetiTION, capital allocation, wealth dynamics
Wednesday 7 June 2017 - 16:15
The session:
- reviewed whether and to what extent globalisation and digitalisation, while enhancing overall competition, might have led to less competition in some sectors and greater market concentration
- discussed the role for competition and international cooperation in addressing those issues in a globalised and digital economy, with the main priority to maintain and reinforce sound competition in all sectors, including the digital and financial sectors which are crucial for the future of economic growth
- reviewed the evolution of the financial sector over the last decades, as well as that of corporate governance practices, and their impact on corporate investment decisions, risk-taking behaviours and capital allocation
- discussed which kind of policy mix would be instrumental in providing the right incentives for financing and investment to better support inclusive growth
- considered the role of taxation in supporting inclusive growth and the room for manoeuvre that exists in a global environment with mobile factors of production
While progress has been made in dealing with tax avoidance, tax evasion, and the increased mobility of taxpayers, these continue to present challenges for tax policymakers.
