Toyin Ajayi - “Person-centered care requires a radical re-orientation of the delivery system out of the doctor’s office and into the spaces where patients are most comfortable.”  

Toyin Ajayi, MD, MPhil, is Chief Medical Officer at Commonwealth Care Alliance (CCA), a Massachusetts non-profit health plan and integrated care delivery system that cares for almost 20,000 individuals with complex medical, behavioural, health and social needs, who are dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid benefits. CCA’s members receive coordinated and integrated services managed by interdisciplinary care teams, and grounded in individualised, patient-centred care decisions. Dr. Ajayi directs clinical programs and oversees clinical care delivery, care management, and clinical operations. Dr. Ajayi is a board-certified family physician and maintains an active clinical practice. She received her undergraduate degree from Stanford University; an MPhil from the University of Cambridge; and her medical degree, with Distinction in Clinical Practice, from King’s College London School of Medicine.  

 

Ran Balicer - MD, PhD, MPH. Director, Clalit Research Institute, Clalit Health Services, Israel.
"Patients possess untapped key insights on their care. We must systematically record patient reported outcome measures, and re-align healthcare towards person-centered value-adding practices."

Prof. Ran Balicer serves as Founding Director of the Clalit Research Institute, the WHO Collaborating Center on Non-Communicable Diseases Research, Prevention and Control. In parallel, he serves as Director of Health Policy Planning for Clalit - Israel's largest healthcare organisation. In these roles, he is responsible for improving healthcare quality and efficiency provided to over half of Israel’s population, by introducing into practice data-driven innovative tools, including predictive care models, real-life effectiveness-based decision support. He also serves as Associate Professor at Israel’s Ben-Gurion University, as Chair of the Israeli Society for Quality in Healthcare, and as a Senior Advisor to the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe. 

 

Donald M. Berwick - MD, MPP, FRCP.

"Person-centeredness is not just one of the dimensions of health care quality, it is the doorway to all qualities."

Don Berwick is President Emeritus and Senior Fellow at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), which he co-founded and led for 18 years. From July 2010, to December 2011, he served as President Obama’s appointee as Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). He has served on the faculties of the Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health, and is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine. His numerous awards include the 2007 William B. Graham Prize for Health Services Research and the 2007 Heinz Award for Public Policy. In 2005, he was appointed Honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. He has authored or co-authored over 160 scientific articles and six books.  

 

 

 

David Blumenthal - "Paraphrasing Donald Berwick, we are all guests in our patients' lives."

Dr. Blumenthal became President and CEO of the Commonwealth Fund, a national health care philanthropy based in New York City, in January 2013. Previously, he served as Chief Health Information and Innovation Officer at Partners Health System in Boston, MA, and was Samuel O. Thier Professor of Medicine and Professor of Health Care Policy at Massachusetts General Hospital/ Harvard Medical School. As a renowned health services researcher and national authority on health IT adoption, he has authored over 250 scholarly publications, including the seminal studies on the adoption and use of health information technology in the United States. 

 

Diana Delnoij - Prof. D.M.J., PhD.  

"Apart from being related to better outcomes, patient-centred care is a core value in itself, which should be an integral part of any performance framework."

Diana Delnoij is a political scientist who has worked as a health services researcher for more than 25 years. She held research and management positions at NIVEL (Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research), and worked as a health systems researcher for the Department of Social Medicine of the University of Amsterdam. Diana Delnoij has published on various research topics, such as payment and insurance systems, health systems, general practice, the role of patient organisations, and quality of care from the patient’s perspective. Apart from that, she holds a special interest in public health. She was a member of the board of the European Public Health Association for several years, and is currently still active as an editor of the European Journal of Public Health. Currently, she is the head of the Department for Research & Development and International Affairs of the National Health Care Institute in the Netherlands.  

 

  

Nicole Denjoy

Nicole Denjoy became Secretary General of COCIR since 2005. Nicole has gathered more than 30 years of experience in the medical technology industry, working for companies including L’air Liquide, Ohmeda, Boston Scientific and Baxter. Nicole has a Masters in Organisation and Change Management. Nicole represents COCIR in a variety of influential fora at European Level as well as at international level. Nicole is also Vice-Chair of DITTA, the Global Trade Association representing Medical Imaging, Radiation Therapy and Healthcare IT Industry (www.globalditta.org) and leads the DITTA Industry in official relationships with WHO since DITTA was granted a NGO status. In addition and since May 2010, Nicole is Chair of the BIAC Health Committee representing the private sector with the OECD Health Committee and other related bodies at the OECD. 

 

Isabelle Durand-Zaleski

"Person-centred care requires the re-engineering of the cooperation between healthcare providers."

Isabelle Durand-Zaleski is a medical doctor, Professor in Public Health. She carried out her PhD research in economics and management at Paris IX University. She holds a Masters in Public Health from Harvard University and a diploma from the Political Study Institute of Paris (Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris). She has been the head of the Evaluation Department in the National Health Authority. She is currently the head of the Paris Health Economics and Health Services Research Unit.  

 

 

 

 

Angel Gurría

“Putting people at the centre promotes health and prosperity for all. It is a key building block for inclusive, sustainable health systems and societies.”

Angel Gurría is the Secretary-General of the OECD since June 2006. As OECD Secretary-General, he has reinforced the OECD's role as a ‘hub” for global dialogue and debate on economic policy issues while pursuing internal modernisation and reform. Mr. Gurría is a Mexican national and came to the OECD following a distinguished career in public service in his country, including positions as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Finance and Public Credit in the 1990s. Mr. Gurría holds a B.A. degree in Economics from UNAM (Mexico) and a M.A. degree in Economics from Leeds University (United Kingdom). He is married and has three children.  

 

 

 

Felicia Marie Knaul - Director, University of Miami Institute for Advanced Study of the Americas; Senior Economist, Mexican Health Foundation; Founding President, Tómatelo a Pecho: Cáncer de Mama.

"People-centered care is a cause that merits evidence-based advocacy and advocacy-inspired research to promote effective health systems that are responsive to patient values."

Felicia Marie Knaul, PhD, is an economist, health systems researcher, and cancer patient advocate. Her research focuses on global health, women and health, health system strengthening and reform, health financing, access to palliative care and pain control, poverty, and gender and inequity. As a result of her breast cancer experience, in 2008 Dr. Knaul founded Tómatelo a Pecho, a Mexico-based non-profit agency that promotes research, advocacy, awareness, and early detection in Latin America and the Caribbean. Combining evidence and advocacy, she has lectured globally on the challenge of breast cancer in low and middle-income countries. She recounts her personal experience in Tómatelo a Pecho (Grupo Santillana, 2009) and Beauty without the Breast (Harvard University Press/ Harvard Global Equity Initiative, 2013). 

 

Christopher J. L. Murray
Director, Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.

Christopher J.L. Murray, MD, DPhil, is a Professor of Global Health at the University of Washington and Director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), whose career has focused on improving health for everyone worldwide by improving health evidence. A physician and health economist, his work has led to the development of a range of new methods and empirical studies to strengthen health measurement, analyse the performance of public health and medical care systems, and assess the cost effectiveness of health technologies. Dr. Murray is a founder of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) approach, a systematic effort to quantify the comparative magnitude of health loss due to diseases, injuries, and risk factors by age, sex, and geography over time. He led the collaborative of almost 500 researchers from 50 countries that produced the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2010 (GBD 2010).  

 

Michael E. Porter - University Professor, Harvard Business School. 

“True Patient-centered care requires focusing on outcomes that matter to patients."

Michael Porter is an economist, researcher, author, advisor, speaker and teacher. Throughout his career at Harvard Business School, he has brought economic theory and strategy concepts to bear on many of the most challenging problems facing corporations, economies and societies, including market competition and company strategy, economic development, the environment, and health care. His extensive research is widely recognised in governments, corporations, NGOs, and academic circles around the globe. His research has received numerous awards, and he is the most cited scholar today in economics and business. While Dr. Porter is, at the core, a scholar, his work has also achieved remarkable acceptance by practitioners across multiple fields. 

 

Cecilia Rodriguez - “Person-centered care: where we are all experts" 
Fundación Me Muevo.

Cecilia Rodríguez, is a Social Communicator with studies in Public Health. After working for several years for the public health system, she was diagnosed with a chronic condition. From that moment, she started advocating for patients through different initiatives. Nowadays, she is the executive director of “Fundación Me Muevo”, a patient lead organization for patients with rheumatic diseases, and as a T-Trainer is responsible for the “Control disease self-management program” at the public health system.

Martin Roland - "The next main challenge which countries face is to design healthcare that meets the needs of frail older people with complex problems."

‌(U.K.) CBE DM is Emeritus Professor of Health Services Research at the University of Cambridge. He was Professor of General Practice in the University of Manchester from 1992 to 2009 and Professor of Health Services Research at the University of Cambridge from 2009 to 2016. He was also a practising general practitioner for 35 years. Professor Roland’s main research interests are developing methods of measuring quality of care, evaluating interventions to improve medical care and designing healthcare systems to provide high quality cost-effective care. 

  

 

Samir K. Sinha - MD, DPhil, FRCPC. Director of Geriatrics, Sinai Health System and the University Health Network, Toronto, Canada.

Dr. Samir Sinha is the Director of Geriatrics at Sinai Health System and the University Health Network in Toronto and an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. A Rhodes Scholar, Samir is a highly regarded clinician and international expert in the care of older adults. He has consulted and advised governments and health care organisations around the world and is the Architect of the Government of Ontario’s Seniors Strategy. In 2014, Maclean’s proclaimed him to be one of Canada’s 50 most influential people and its most compelling voice for the elderly.

  

Olivia Wigzell - "People-centered care means a shift in perspective. It means taking into account new knowledge and experience and to promote innovation driven by needs and wishes."

Olivia Wigzell is Director General at the National Board of Health and Welfare, a government agency under the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. She was previously Director General at the National Agency for assessing healthcare and social services interventions. Wigzell has worked as Director at the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. She was chairman of an EU-expert group on the topic of Health System Performance Assessment. She was also vice Mayor in Stockholm and County Council Commissioner in the Greater Stockholm Area. She holds a position in the Boards for Örebro University, for developing the Quality-Registries and in the Advisory Council at the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency. Wigzell is also the Swedish representative in the WHO Executive Board. Wigzell holds a degree in political science and communication.

 

Petra Wilson - Managing Director, Health Connect Partners. Senior Advisor for Healthcare, FTI Consulting.
"Person centred care requires constant openness to adaptation as peoples’ needs, capacities and desires change in the course of the healthcare journey."

After more than twenty years, Petra has recently established Health Connect Partners, a consultancy practice focusing on legal, regulatory and policy issues in eHealth. She is also working as a Senior Advisor in the large international consultancy firm FTI Consulting, leading the healthcare team in Brussels. Her previous professional experience includes CEO of the International Diabetes Federation, promoting better and more integrated care for people living with diabetes; a seven-year period in eHealth technology with Cisco; and eight years with the European Commission working on eHealth policy, and in particular on the use of patient data to drive better care. Petra has a doctorate in Public Health Law from Oxford University.

MODERATORS‌

Ali Aslan

Ali Aslan is a seasoned television presenter and journalist. He has worked for global news networks such as CNN, ABC News, Channel News Asia and Deutsche Welle TV, where he hosted the international talk show “Quadriga“. A frequent conference moderator and public speaker, Aslan has also served as a Policy and Media Advisor to the German government, including the Foreign Office. Aslan has been named a Young Leader by the American Council on Germany, the BMW Foundation, the German Marshall Fund, the Bertelsmann Foundation, the Munich Security Conference and the Atlantik-Bruecke. He is the first German recipient of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations International Fellowship and an alumnus of the Koerber Network Foreign Policy. Aslan holds an M.A. in Journalism and a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University. He received his B.A. in International Politics from Georgetown University.

Hee Kyong Kim

Hee Kyong Kim is a reporter and anchor at the Korean broadcasting company, MBN, and is currently Deputy Head of the International News Department. She has covered various political issues including Korea’s 18th Presidential Election, as well as diverse economic and international news. While anchoring the news magazine program, ‘Kim, Hee Kyong’s Live Today’ and ‘Korea Business Today’, ‘MBN Evening News’, ‘Newswide’, etc., she interviewed various world leaders, scholars, and notable figures of the political, economic, and cultural sphere. Ms. Kim has presided over and moderated sessions at the yearly World Knowledge Forum and the MBN Forum since its early stages, and hosted the martyr beatification ceremonies in Gwanghwamun Square, Seoul during Pope Francis’ historic visit to Korea in 2014. She holds an M.A. in International Studies from the Graduate School of International Studies at Korea University.‌
