Côte d’Ivoire : Brainstorming workshop, 5-6 April 2016, Abijan

The OECD Development Centre, in collaboration with the Presidency of the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire and the Ministry for the Promotion of Youth, Youth Employment and Civic Service, held a brainstorming workshop to discuss The National Youth Policy (NPC) 2016-2020. This workshop was organized as part of the Youth Inclusion project. The two-day event, held in Abidjan 5-6 April 2016, brought together key actors working on youth-related issues, including ministries, research institutes, international organisations, NGOs and Organizations. The opening ceremony was presided by the Minister Sidi Touré Tiémoko.

The Youth Inclusion project supports the Government of Côte d'Ivoire in improving its national youth policies by providing a thorough diagnosis of the situation of Ivorian youth and evidence-based recommendations. The project team presented findings of the analysis on the effects of early pregnancy on employment and the existing decent employment opportunities in promising economic sectors in Cote d'Ivoire. On the basis of these inputs, the workshop provided an opportunity to review the current draft of the national youth policy and to develop a timetable for its implementation.

Key messages from the workshop include the need for closer inter-ministerial cooperation and a more inclusive and participatory process that engages all actors, especially young people.

Participants also stressed the importance of collecting reliable data on young people and clearly identifying target groups to enhance the relevance and effectiveness of youth policies. The workshop demonstrated the government's willingness to improve the living conditions of young people and to promote better opportunities for them. This workshop marked a step towards the development of a relevant and inclusive national youth policy.
