OECD at the Paris Peace Forum

| Picking up on the deliberations of OECD Week 2018 and particularly OECD Forum conversations exploring “What Brings Us Together?” last May, the OECD was present at the Paris Peace Forum as one of the event’s institutional partners. We brought our expertise, experience and support to the event’s call for collective reflection and action to respond to today’s and tomorrow’s global challenges. Our belief, based on nearly 60 years of data collection and evidence-based analysis on social, economic and environmental issues, is that, in an interconnected world, international co-operation is the surest means to improve our common well-being. The Paris Peace Forum provided an opportunity for world leaders to “walk the talk”, and build a more humane, transparent and responsive world in which we all work together for the common good. This was at the core of the OECD Secretary-General’s intervention with 50 Heads of State and leaders on 11 November 2018. |

At the OECD we do this by distilling and advancing best policy practices and helping establish standards so that all actors play by agreed rules based on shared values, in areas such as tax, the environment, anti-corruption, corporate governance and responsible business conduct, among many others. We provide comparative evidence and analysis to support decision making on key national policy questions. Importantly, we also help governments develop global solutions to challenges no one can address alone, such as inequalities, migration, digital transformation, climate change or the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). During the Paris Peace Forum, the Secretary-General reflected on the impact of increasing levels of inequalities on people’s trust in globalisation and multilateralism, and the processes that govern it, in the context of the session “Inequalities: Globalization Shooting Itself in the Foot?” (12 November, 13:15), echoing OECD Forum debates on Inclusive Growth: The Empowering State and the “Left Out and Behind”. The Paris Peace Forum was also a valuable space to further advance the global policy agenda on specific cross-cutting issues such as gender inequality, thanks to the contribution of Gabriela Ramos, Chief of Staff, G20 Sherpa & Special Counsellor to the Secretary-General, OECD to the high-level session “Gender Equality: Is Time Up?” (12 November, 17:00).
To serve the citizens of a fast-changing world, the OECD is taking ever-greater efforts to integrate the views of stakeholders and individuals from all walks of life. To catalyse such views and experiment new approaches, the OECD convened an interactive workshop at the Paris Peace Forum reflecting on “People Power: Collective Intelligence in the new era of international co-operation”, building on OECD Forum discussions at the Civic innovation hub. Central to our ability to capture these concerns is the use of cutting-edge consultation platforms such as the OECD Better Life Index, the interactive tool allowing you to compare well-being across countries and 11 indicators. The Paris Peace Forum, with its chorus of diverse voices and many discussion spaces, is an important global event to contribute to our mission to design, develop and deliver “Better Policies for Better Lives”. |
