The standardisation process may produce substantial benefits for the protection of the environment, health and consumers, promoting competition in the market, fostering international trade and providing interoperability between products among others.
However, the establishment of technical regulations and standards may also damage competition raising unjustified barriers.This report first describes the anti and pro-competitive effects of standards to then analyse the Mexican standardisation process to issue both technical regulations (Normas Oficiales Mexicanas) and standards (Normas Mexicanas).
